Project Jenny, Project Jan

Written By: Sean on August 14, 2007 No Comment

Project Jenny, Project Jan are Sammy Rubin & Jeremy Haines. The band’s music can be best described as…well, really there is no best description. From song to song the band embrace diverse sounds from electro to folk to salsa and the band describe themselves as ‘electro karaoke’. If you want to assign them a genre, please do so, because I frankly can’t come up with one.

In the end, all I can do is recommend you pick up the album (in stores today) because it’s more than worthy of your listening time.

How did you two meet & ultimately decide to form a band?

We met in the Roaring Nineties. Everything was different then, and yet, eerily similar. We had friends who knew both of us from different times and places, and so we all went to the same parties. We started making music together years later when we both lived in Brooklyn. There seemed to be a serious lack of Electro-Karaoke bands in New York, so we decided to fill the void, so to speak.

Your music sounds like it draws inspiration from almost every genre. Who
would you list among your chief influences?

There are so many influences, it is hard for us to decide which is the chief. We have very different tastes in music, but where we overlap is where we get the music.

Obviously neither of you are named Jenny or Jan. Where’d the name come from?

We came up with these two girls who were either super heros or super villains, so we named them Jenny, and Jan and the band became Project Jenny, Project Jan soon after.

Any interesting experiences from the road you’d like to share?

We got really lost coming home from Cleveland. It was so stupid. We were listening to Run DMC and were into the music that we didn’t realize we had been on the wrong road until we were in Pittsburgh. Oops.

What music (besides your own) are you guys currently into?

We are listening to a lot of our friends music right now including: Fujiya and Miyagi, Pela, Dirty on Purpose, Mixel Pixel, Au Revoir Simone, Numbers and Letters, The Movies, Rocketship Park and of course the old summer reliables.

If you were making us a mixtape, what are 5 essential songs you’d include?

Photocopier – Fujiya & Miyagi
Tenement Teeth – Pela
You’re the kind of Girl – Mixel Pixel
A Violent Yet Flammable World – Au Revoir Simone
Brooklyn – Project Jenny, Project Jan

Tell us something everyone should know about you but very few do.

Rubin enjoys complaining, Junior enjoys a liberal hair-washing schedule.
