The Future Sound of Russia
When I think of thriving music scenes, I don’t usually think of Russia. Why? No particular reason I can think of. Sure, Russia usually pops into my conciousness whenever Eurovision comes around, as they typically have a cracking technopop entry every year. But otherwise – I suppose like many Westerners – I tend to default to the European Union when searching for music. Somehow my musical circumnavigation of the globe never quite makes it up to the former U.S.S.R.

Well, shame on me for my short-sighted musical travels! Obviously, I’m missing out on a truly amazing and innovative Russian music scene while blindly obsessing over the latest band to pop up out of Manchester or Paris or Sydney. That’s recently been corrected though, as I was lucky enough to have a Russian music compliation called Future Sound of Russia passed on to me. The compilation focuses on bands in the St Petersberg and Moscow indie scenes.
A brief excerpt from the album sleeve:
Future Sound of Russia is: Indie dance rock. Electro club-monsters. Italo-disco grooves. Shoe-gazer distortion worthy of My Bloody Valentine. Jangly pop-hooks that recall the likes of Suede. And indie-electro-dance numbers that rival the best of The Faint or The Rapture.
That description is apt, if not all-encompassing. Many of the tracks here go far beyond the described genres and artist reference points. There are hints of The Fall, Gary Numan and even a little Chic. It’s honestly one of the best compilations I’ve heard all year, and I highly recommend you pick it up. How do you pick it up, you say? Well I’m glad you asked! It was released on Tuesday through AEROCCP, and can be found at the Aero Online Store, iTunes, Amazon MP3 and regular old Amazon.
