The Asteroids Galaxy Tour

If you’re like me, you don’t want to like music in an iPod ad. After all, there’s this inherent need in every blogger to deny the effects of advertising on our lives, but especially on our music-purchasing habits. When the public at large starts snatching up Feist CDs because they heard ‘1,2,3,4’ in an ad for those funny, stubby Generation 3 Nanos, we like to scoff and proclaim ‘I can’t believe THEY like her now’, then subsequently chuck our copies of The Reminder into the bin and act as though we never liked her in the first place.

This is, of course, really asinine. Just because an ad exec (who is likely between 24-36 years old) realized a really great song could sell Swiffers doesn’t mean the song is devoid of merit. But it’s always in the back of our minds – like an inner voice that won’t shut up – that we simply should not allow this song to entertain us, and if we do then we’ve been corrupted by the Advertirati. So what’s a boy to do when he hears the new iPod Touch ad and realizes it’s the catchiest darn thing he’s heard in a good, long while? Suck it up, and find out just who is to blame for that catchy tune.

Cue The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, a newly formed band from Copenhagen featuring Lars Iversen and Matte Lindberg. If you’ve heard the aforementioned iPod ad, then you know this band is all sunshine retro melodies, like 1969 itself had been wrapped in a rainbow. I was recently sent their Around the Bend EP – a collection of 3 original tracks plus a remix by Bruce Aisher, and after listening I was glad I locked my inner snob in the closet.

If you take a chance you might be really glad you did, too. Though I suppose I should give this public health warning – this stuff is so sweet it has been known to cause cavities.
