The Joy Formidable – Cradle
This song takes me back to the wonderful (and greatly missed) days of Lush, The Breeders & 90s female-fronted ‘alternative’ bands. Not that there haven’t been a great number of bands of a similar kind in the meantime, but this track specifically echoes back to that era, for me.
I remember spending my lunch hour in junior & senior year of high school walking to the nearby record store and sitting at the listening stations to absorb as much music as I could. I’d jot down the new release schedule in my notebook from the huge dry erase board they were displayed on (Remember kids, this was in the early days of the internet, and we didn’t have all of this information at our fingertips whenever we wanted it!). If I knew something good was coming, I’d skip lunch for a week and then the following Tuesday pick up whatever new record I was waiting for with that saved cash. Suffice it to say, I lost a lot of weight in my junior year. In senior year I started my first job so I think I gained it all back. Them’s the breaks!
Nostalgia aside, this song is wonderful. It makes me happy every time I listen to it.
