What the Frak?

My favorite Science Fiction show is returning for its final 10 episodes starting tonight. If you’ve forgotten what’s going on, this little video should catch you up (if you’ve never seen BSG, stay far away, this is spoilerific to the max).

What I love about this show and feel was one of its strongest points from day 1 is that *no* decision is made from a comfortable perch of moral superiority. Every choice has a consequence, and rarely is any issue a simple matter of black & white (much like, well, life). A lot of that stems from Ron Moore’s choice to posit the series as ‘naturalistic science fiction’ – to show people as neither heroes nor villains, but merely as they are. That’s why Moore & David Eick usually refer to Baltar as being the most ‘human’ character on the show. His actions are certainly never trumpeted as being ‘correct’, yet you can’t help but feel sorry for him. He seems to make one bad choice after another, but almost consistently without malice. In fact, usually he’s just trying to get laid. That’s probably why he’s the one character most people can identify with! ;)

Tonight’s episode? Wow. When I think they’ve outdone themselves, they raise their game again. If you missed it, be sure to catch the rerun! The Fifth Cylon is revealed, and a major character is killed. Plus, the shock of the mid-season finale looms over everyone and people seriously start to lose it. Edward James Olmos is outstanding. It’s just so much more than your typical science fiction series. Minimal technobabble, maximum character development. Watch this show, mmkay?
