White Lies US Tour

Written By: Sean on February 2, 2009 No Comment

I have to thank Mark for turning me onto White Lies, though I’m certain I would have loved them upon hearing them, regardless of when it happened. The eerie organ that opens ‘Unfinished Business’ hooked me straight away, but married with Jack Brown’s propulsive percussion, Harry McVeigh’s bittersweet vocals & Charles Cave’s trippy lyrics about a man who tries to comfort his distraught girlfriend while slowly realizing he’s died at her hands…phew. Hooked doesn’t really cover it. Starving for more would be closer to the truth.

Now, I know there have been all sorts of comparisons and the inevitable backlash has already kicked in. ‘Oh, they’re just like Interpol!’ or ‘Another Joy Division ripoff’. The oddest comparison I’ve heard puts them in a category with The Killers, and while that may not be the strangest connection I’ve ever seen, I definitely don’t get it. Sure, White Lies aren’t shy about their influences, but I don’t feel they’re overshadowed by them either. Interpol faced similar accusations when they first hit, but after time passed they proved that they had their own ideas. I trust White Lies will do the same. Besides, you have to admire a band that makes a record about mortality sound so damn catchy.

The boys will be hitting the interstates of America in March & April to promote the US release of their debut (March 17th), finishing it off with a performance at Coachella. BIYL favorites Friendly Fires will be joining them on the road, alongside a band out of San Diego called The Soft Pack. I have to admit I’m not familiar with them, but since they’re keeping such good company I’ll have to remedy that.
