Polly Scattergood
I am *so* excited for Polly Scattergood’s debut to hit us here in the U.S. She’s another artist I discovered thanks to my former blogmate, Mark. He has a real knack for picking up on musicians right before they absolutely explode (White Lies & Glasvegas immediately come to mind). Polly is yet another in a long line of artists that I have no doubt will prove he once again has a sixth sense when it comes to ‘hotly tipped’.

Her new single is called ‘I Hate The Way’, and it is absolutely outstanding. Everything she sings is outstanding, but I really, really love this song. I first heard it in live form, thanks to a performance broadcast on Manchester’s Channel M last year. The track is full of the kind of vulnerability & fury that Polly is fast becoming famous for. I don’t think it’s possible to listen to her without feeling as though you’re going through it all right along with her.
In some ways, it reminds me of Conor Oberst’s early Bright Eyes albums. You could hear another thread pulled loose with every new verse he sang/screamed/cried out, and there was never any question about sincerity. I’d say Miss Scattergood’s sense of humor might be slightly more developed, as even the darkest tales are delivered with a wry sense of humor (‘However much much I toss and turn/I feel a dark place up ahead/But my doctor said I’ve got to sing a happy tune’).
Her self-titled debut album will be released via Mute (who else?) on May 19th. ‘I Hate The Way’ will be released digitally and as a 10″ on February 24th with B-side ‘Poem Song’.
