New Fever Ray video

And the excellent new video streak is continued…

When I Grow Up from Fever Ray on Vimeo.

Fever Ray is a unique project. Take the new single/video ‘When I Grow Up’ – it’s out there, sure, if placed side-by-side with your standard pop tune. But if it’s viewed on its own terms, it’s an absolutely gorgeous piece of music and you realize Karin (of similarly-themed The Knife) has actual TUNES to back up her eccentricities. The songs don’t merely feel like an excuse to be as weird as humanly possible, without any other creative direction (I’m thinking of someone she’s often compared to – I’m sure you can figure it out). I like the southwestern/Native American elements that are incorporated here, and you’d think I wouldn’t, because I live in the Southwest and I hear a lot of that kind of thing. Maybe it’s the novelty of a Swede tackling the style?

The video itself? I won’t bother trying to explain it, other than a girl resembling Nell is trying to conjure demons in a dirty swimming pool. I like it.

  1. I thought you said you didn’t like the Fever Ray album? Although our e-mail conversations tend to be a bit confusing…

  2. No, I was the one that liked it. I think maybe it was Keath that wasn’t so crazy about it.

  3. Who is she often compared to? I can’t think of anyone even close.

    • I’ve read a number of blogs where they compare her (at least vocally) to Bjork. I know it’s an opinion that is anathema to most bloggers, but I’ve never been a big Bjork fan. I think she’s made a handful of good tunes but most of the time it seems – to me – she’s making difficult music for the sake of making difficult music.
