You’re my zero
I didn’t realize just how much I missed the Yeah Yeah Yeahs until I heard this new song. Do you remember a simpler time when The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand and the YYY’s ruled the indie airwaves (and dancefloors)? The early Aughts, such a magical period.
I used to get insane mileage out of ‘Last Night’, ‘Y Control’ and ‘Take Me Out’ in my early DJ days. It seemed as though crowds would never, ever get sick of those 3 songs. But the inevitable downfall came, and The Strokes were the first to take a hit with Room on Fire. The angular guitars that Franz Ferdinand made fashionable suddenly became the commonplace crutch of every indie band in existence, so they were kicked to the curb, too.
Then there were the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They suffered some backlash with album 2 as well, but for the most part they seemed to come through relatively unscathed. But then they vanished off the radar, with only the Is Is EP to let us know they were still alive. Not that the EP wasn’t great (it was), but it certainly gave little hint as to what’s coming our way in April, if ‘Zero’ is any indication.
‘Zero’ is definitely a bit of a departure from what we’ve known, though not quite the dramatic one I’ve read about elsewhere. After all, how were ‘Y Control’ or ‘Turn Into’ not pop? Admittedly, this song doesn’t have the abrasive edge of say, ‘Pin’ or ‘Black Tongue’, but do we expect these guys to churn out the same records every single time? Besides, the most important piece of the YYY’s puzzle – Karen O’s orgasmic vocal delivery – is still front and center here. As long as that’s intact, I think we can suffer a bit of synth-y experimentation. Welcome back Yeah Yeah Yeahs, I missed you.
