Spinnerette
When I first saw this in my inbox, I fully intended to delete it without a second thought. After all, I am not a Distillers fan and I don’t shop at Hot Topic. So why would this interest me? Sure, it made me a snobby jerk but all bloggers have a touch of snobby jerk in them. I reconsidered though – figured, what’s it hurt to take a peek?

I’m not sure what to say here, other than I like this. Yeah, really. Brody’s ditched the screaming noise of The Distillers and taken a page out of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s & Kills playbook. A little more Joan Jett, a dash of Pat Benatar. It’s a pretty polished affair, but it suits her in a way I’d have never expected.
Allow me to introduce Spinnerette, Dalle’s latest project. It’s not really a band, per se, although the EP did include contributions from former fellow Distiller Tony Bevilacqua, Alain Johannes from husband Josh Homme’s QOTSA & Jack Irons of Red Hot Chilli Peppers. An eclectic bunch, yeah? Still, Dalle maintains that “Spinnerette isn’t a band, it’s me and whichever musicians I want to work with at the time”.
Normally, if I’d heard of this particular group of musicians collaborating I’d tune out pretty fast. But I like this far better than I’ve ever liked their individual outfits, so maybe they should have done this a long time ago. Honestly, tell me this couldn’t sit comfortably next to ‘Jealous Girls’, ‘Love is a Deserter’ or ‘Heartbreaker’? If Hipsters can have an ironic get down to Good Charlotte, there’s no reason they shouldn’t like this.
The Ghetto Love EP is now available on iTunes, Shockhound and Spinnerettemusic. Check out the video for the title track directed by Liam Lynch (the Sifl & Olly & ‘United States of Whatever’ guy – yeah, really), below. It’s more or less just Dalle in front of some green screens, but the song itself is pretty good.

I dunno – it’s definitely better than The Distillers but it sounds like a less-melodic Garbage to me. If someone put it on, I’d listen to it, but it’s not something I’d pick on my own.
YouTube has several other album tracks for those who want further listening.
I’m not hearing that so much, but maybe because she sounds nothing like Shirley Manson to me (then again, Garbage sounded like garbage after album 2 so I don’t listen to them as much anymore). I’m not saying it’s a life changer, but I think it’s so much better than I expected I’m willing to give it a little leeway.
I was thinking the same about the YYYs comparison. I really like it!
