Lay Low

I have another Icelandic pixie to add to my ever-expanding list – Lovisa Elisabet Sigrunardottir a.k.a. Lay Low. She’s a charming folk singer/songwriter that will be releasing her sophomore album on Nettwerk come May 26th. It’s all very low-key, but far from sedate, which is an important and crucial difference in my book. Vocally, she sounds like a cross between Alessi’s Ark and Gin Wigmore. Good company to keep!
The record is called Farewell Good Night’s Sleep, though I think listening to this would actually invite a very pleasant night’s sleep, personally. Lay Low’s classified as country, though I wouldn’t instantly categorize her in that way. I suppose you could say she’s indie country in the same way Neko Case or Angus & Julia Stone might be. Though both ‘Last Time Around’ and ‘By and By’ have that Johnny Cash rhythm to them, so I guess country is as good a name as any for what she does. This is why I hate genres! It’s good, no matter what you call it.
If you can’t wait ’till May, you can buy the album in digital format (MP3 or FLAC) right now, on Nettwerk’s website.
