Prodigy US Tour

A new Prodigy record? I feel like I’m back in high school!

I can’t say I was jumping for joy or feeling too much enthusiasm upon hearing the news that we were soon to receive a new Prodigy LP. Even though I really enjoyed the band’s 90s output (who didn’t?), I wasn’t crazy about their last record, Always Outnumber Never Outgunned, and I hadn’t pulled out Fat of the Land or Music for a Jilted Generation in quite a while.

The title Invaders Must Die piqued my interest, however, and I’m glad for it. I really like this record. A lot! It’s hard, abrasive and exhilarating, like the best of the band’s output in years past. It grabs you right from the opening title track, which serves as a kind of war cry as well as a forceful assertion that the band are back in a big way – ‘We are The Prodigy! Invaders must die!’. It sets the tone for everything that follows. The whole thing seems like code for ‘Step aside youngsters, the adults are here to show you how it’s done’.

The first single to be released from the album is ‘Omen’, though it probably wouldn’t have been my first choice. I’m partial to the glorious ‘Thunder’, with its dizzying, booming beats and reggae chanting courtesy of Brother Culture. But ‘Omen’ is good, and features co-production duties by DIOYY’s James Rushent. Maybe because the record came as such a surprise I’m being more forgiving or lending it greater acclaim than it deserves, but I’m pretty taken with it right now. It’s rave and rock and punk and electro all rolled up into one.

The band will embark on their first US tour in some time this May. Their April UK tour sold out, so if you’d like to catch them, you may want to pick up your tickets now.
