M83 We Own The Sky
Just when you thought M83 had wrung out all possible singles from last year’s Saturdays=Youth, he surprises you and manages to squeeze out yet another.
‘We Own The Sky’ is now available as a digital-only single on iTunes, Amazon, etc. It includes the album track as well as a radio edit, a remix of both the title track and previous single ‘Graveyard Girl’, and a new b-side titled ‘Je Vous Hais Petites Filles’. Now, I’m admittedly a completist, so I love collecting singles, 7-inch’s, white labels, etc., but I’ll fully admit that in many instances they aren’t really worth the plastic they’re issued on (or in some cases, the bytes they’re made of).
In this case, however, I’d call the purchase of the the single a sound investment. The Maps remix of ‘We Own The Sky’ is quite a transformation, and surprisingly upbeat and uptempo for a Maps remix. I almost like it better than the original. Almost. The Parkerlab remix of ‘Graveyard Girl’ is also a worthy effort, and takes the 80s-flavored pop track & turns it into a much moodier, darker affair. I think part of that effect is achieved by removing guest vocalist Morgan Kibby completely. I really enjoyed her vocals on this track as it gave the original a teenage angst angle, but given the dark nature of the remix it seems appropriate that they’ve been clipped. ‘Je Vous Hais Petites Filles’ is an instrumental track, but certainly more than mere filler.
In other M83 news, you may or may not have heard that they’ve managed to snag the opening spot on Depeche Mode’s upcoming European tour. Seems like a much better match-up than their US tour with The Killers, huh? They will be playing a few headline US dates before heading to Europe, including he Sasquatch Festival in Washington.
