Freeland
Boy, coming down off of a very creative/inspirational streak can be a real bummer. I’ve felt very motivated the last few days, organizing and writing and listening to all kinds of new music, and that all came to a screeching halt this morning, as I realized I was totally zapped of energy. What’s not helping is the absolutely insane wind that threatens to spin me ’round like a record, or quite possibly like a cow in a Jan de Bont movie. When I go out in it, it feels as though I’m being pummeled by rocks even though I’m convinced the actual experience of being pummeled by rocks would be far, far worse. Go away wind, we don’t want you anymore.
As a result, I’m tired, cranky and unmotivated. A decent little dance number was just what I needed, and it came courtesy of DJ/producer Adam Freeland. His new project, appropriately titled Freeland, have just decided to offer up their debut single for free. ‘Under Control’ is a catchy little tune, bass-heavy and ready for the floor. I’d be remiss to not point out that it’s all a bit ‘Daft Punk is Playing at my House’, what with lead vocalist Kurt Baumann so obviously channeling James Murphy in his delivery. Not that it feels like a parody, just that it stylistically sits very nearby.
Some of the remixes of the track (which you can stream in the player below) are actually quite good, and distance the band from that DFA sound to a much greater degree. I’d recommend the Zombie Nation or Evil Nine remixes if you want something a little different.
The rest of the LP features guest appearances by Brody Dalle of Spinnerette/The Distillers, Joey Santiago of the Pixies, Jerry Casale of DEVO and Tommy Lee (one of these names is not like the others, one of these names does not belong). You can buy Cope™ in digital or vinyl form here.
