Via Tania
I’m on a female singer kick today that doesn’t look as though it will be stopped anytime soon. In fact, Via Tania seems to be of a similar vein to Bat For Lashes, so maybe I’m more specifically on an ethereal female singer kick. She even seems to dress like her, at least in the few stills I’ve seen of her. Feathers and intense eye makeup, that sort of thing. Vocally, she’s certainly floating in similar circles too, as I don’t think Bat For Lashes would be too far removed. Though she’s a bit folkier, maybe matching Feist more easily than Natasha Kahn (she cites Suzanne Vega as an early influence).
The she in question is Tania Bowers, who grew up in Australia to South African parents, which perhaps accounts for the outsider’s feel to her music. She happens to do a killer version of the best song from The Presets’ last opus, Apocalypso. ‘If I Know You’ is called a remix, but I’d more readily identify it as a cover. The general atmosphere is pretty close to the original, but she makes the track even more solemn & meditative (and admittely, less dancefloor appropriate).
