Datarock Red
I remember Djing with Gerald Casale from Devo back in 2006. When I asked him what bands he was excited about at the time, he mentioned Teddybears, Digitalism and Datarock. In fact, I seem to remember him playing all 3 during his DJ set (along with some other brilliant stuff like Utah Saints & the Isley Brothers, and a record of Air Force sound effects). When someone like Jerry tells you he’s excited about a band, you take note.
When Datarock Datarock came out in 2005, I think it may have been unfairly eclipsed by releases by LCD Soundsystem, The Presets and Daft Punk. Too bad, because it was better than at least one of those (hint: Daft Punk). Not that it wasn’t appreciated or wasn’t as good as those efforts, I just think it was overshadowed by the unexpected popularity of those artists. Of course, when Nettwerk re-released it in 2007, it was once again a solid year for electronic releases with both the debut album from Justice as well as James Murphy’s stellar sophomore release as LCD Soundsystem. These two just couldn’t catch a break, it seems.
Hopefully, 2009 will be a good year for Datarock (and without any releases by LCD, Daft Punk or Justice on the horizon, it looks like an open playing field). Their new album, Red, will be out September 1st. Lead single ‘Give It Up’ already has a video, featuring more red jogging suits than a Wes Anderson flick. It seems to be loosely based on MJ’s ‘Bad’ and its inspiration, West Side Story, and is pretty entertaining.
No tour dates just yet, but there should be news on that front soon!
