Mass Games
This is one of those artists I’ve had in the back of my head to write a post about for months, but for whatever silly reason I just kept re-queuing it over and over again. Maybe I just couldn’t think of anything worthwhile to say? Or I just wasn’t in the right mood. I’m a temperamental bastard, after all. You never know what I’m going to do at any given moment.

I’ve really been enjoying this EP by Mass Games. The fact that it came packaged to me as ‘dark electro from Thailand’ obviously helped pique my interest, as I don’t get a lot of dark electro from Thailand in my mailbox. In fact, I’m pretty sure this is the first time. Most things that pop into my email from Thailand have nothing to do with music, I’ll put it that way.
This is a project by a guy named Joe who described it thusly:
“I started a new music project called MASS GAMES. I’ve just finished
an EP while I’m working on a full length album. Not good at
describing music, but I’d say it’s an “electronic”, slightly dark,
electro pop (?) thing, using samples pulled from
learn-to-speak-english tapes…
Fair enough description, and I think I’d probably place it as a sort of intermediate step between The Slips and Black Devil Disco Club. If they all shared a stage, I’d definitely be in line for tickets. Not everything is dark, either. ‘Riding A New Wave’ is very Legend of Zelda, though not quite 8-bit or Nintendocore by any means. It’s a surprisingly warm track though, and quite upbeat. ‘Zone B’, on the other hand, almost sounds like something Lisa Lisa would have dug back in the 80s. There’s a nice range here, something that a lot of bedroom electronic artists don’t tend to have.
