Great Northern are still riding high from the release of their second album, Remind Me Where The Light Is. They offered up ‘Houses’ as a free mp3, and are now offering a second single, ‘Story’. ‘Story’ is the gorgeous album opener, and a fitting introduction to the excellent new material.

Additionally, the band’s label, Eenie Meenie are running a contest for fans. All you have to do is snap a few shots at one of their shows with Dears & Eulogies, the email it to contest@eeniemeenie.com. 3 lucky fans will win Remind Me Where The Light Is on 180 gram vinyl, a limited edition 7″ featuring an unreleased track, and a canvas tote bag.

linusloves

Breastfed/21:12 label boss Linus Loves sent over this remix by one of his latest signings, Burns. It’s a remix of one of Filthy Dukes latest singles, ‘Messages’ (which amusingly enough features the lyric ‘burn burn burn’). I posted Burns twisted take on LL’s ‘Prom Night’ last week, and this mix just might be even better than that one. It’s well equipped to massacre a dancefloor near you.

Another of my new favorite bands, The Joy Formidable, have recently released their debut, A Balloon Called Moaning. The record has been out for a while now, but you can preview the entire effort on their Myspace. They are also heading out on their first headlining UK tour, and releasing new single ‘Whirring’. If you pre-order the single, you will receive a signed copy of the single, an exclusive whirring 35mm badge and entry to a competition to win one of 10 pairs of Willy-Whirring golden tickets. These tickets will give you a lifetime of free entry to ANY headlining TJF concert. Pretty spiffy, eh?

And here we have the latest video from Katy ‘I Kissed A Girl At Least In Lyrical Form For A Sales Boost’ Perry. ‘Waking Up In Vegas’ is another Top 40 bullseye featuring Joel David Moore as her video boyfriend. Oh I know what you’re thinking. But I can’t help it! I have a soft spot for Katy Perry, despite how ridiculous and poppy and disposable her songs are. Is it because she’s obscenely attractive and I have an embarrassing crush? Yes. Yes it is (these songs are damned catchy though).

I posted the new video from Australia’s Howling Bells last week, but I neglected to mention that they’ve signed to one of my favorite indie labels, Nettwerk. They’ll be releasing their sophomore album on the label, titled Radio Wars (their first album has sadly never seen the light of day here in the states). The new record will be out July 28th, and the band will be playing an opening slot for Coldplay on their May/June North American tour. Hopefully that will raise their profile among US audiences!

That Great Northern record is quite good. I have this vague niggling feeling that it’s a little too slick for its own good, but the songs are just so good that I don’t worry about it.

Yeah, there’s a terrific amount of polish to it, but I think that was present on the first record, too. I can appreciate polish when it’s not distracting.
