More Burns
Thus far, I have not heard a single Passion Pit song. That’s not a boast to make myself appear above the influence or otherwise too cool for school. It’s just a statement of fact. Sometimes I slip into my own little world and miss out on the big blog trends. The more time goes by, the less likely it is I’ll look into it. I think the general intensity dissipates and if you aren’t in from the start it’s easy to dismiss it. I definitely caught the band in my periphery more than once, but I never stopped to look.
It’s like my relationship with Top Gun – I’ve never seen it. The original reason I didn’t see it was because I was sick with the flu when my parent’s decided to see it. They must not have been that crazy about it, because they never rented it. Life continued on, and I never made any effort to see it. I didn’t deliberately avoid it, but for whatever reason I never stumbled onto it. Now, of course, I don’t really want to see it because it’s a nice conversation topic to keep in my back pocket for uncomfortable silences at parties. Clearly it works well as the basis for a blog post (at least I think it does)!
The only reason I bring any of this up is that good sir Linus Loves sent along several more Burns remixes for us to enjoy (previous posts on Burns can be found here and here), and one of them is of the aforementioned Passion Pit. If I were to go by this remix, they sound a bit like MGMT. The remix is cracking good, regardless of what the original might sound like. So good, I’ll take the time to hunt down Passion Pit and see what it’s all about. In his remix work, Burns has shown a real talent for honoring what’s great about the original tracks, so PP’s song must be pretty fabulous to begin with.
Burns has also taken on Empire of the Sun’s ‘We Are The People’. Finally, a top-notch EOTS remix! I’ve heard some pretty stinky ones lately (aside from the Golden Filter take), but once again Burns nails it. You don’t eff with a good thing, and EOTS is a very, very good thing. Burns actually makes his remix slightly more haunting than the original, courtesy of some nice piano work. And instead of focusing on the lead guitar, he brings the bass front-and-center, creating a funkier feel. It’s different, but complimentary.
I really can’t wait to hear an LP from this guy!
