Band of Skulls
Another band I keep meaning to talk about but have let slip through the cracks up until now are the UK’s latest offering, Band of Skulls. I think I did give them a sort of sideways acknowledgment a few weeks ago when I mentioned Spinnerette would be touring with them, but that’s simply not enough!
They’re a bluesy bunch, and there’s a Black Rooster-era Kills vibe to them (and obviously you can trace that back elsewhere, as it’s a very modern reference point), though I’d say they go for the anthemic rock chorus a bit more often, as well as having a fondness for lengthy jam sessions. They also have a real, live drummer. All good things, in their case.
Out of those two tracks, I’d have to say my favorite is ‘Blood’, but ‘I Know What I Am’ is probably the more likely of the two to be picked up by radio/mainstream outlets (radio still exists, right?). It has the catchier chorus and isn’t quite so down and dirty. Of course, I love down and dirty, so ‘Blood’ is right up my alley. Plus, I’ve always been a fan of frontwomen full of attitude, and Emma Richardson isn’t coming up short on that. There’s a real Chrissie Hynde quality to her, maybe minus some of Chrissie’s softer moments. The last few minutes of the song head off into 70s jam/freak out territory, and I think I may have got a contact high just from listening, but I love it.
Even though the meaning is lost on me, the title of their debut Baby Darling Doll Face Honey seems strangely appropriate. It is available now on iTunes.
