New Release Addendum
When I was running through my new release list earlier today, I managed to leave out one of the biggest releases! The Gossip are back with their first album since 2006’s Standing in the Way of Control, as well as their major label debut. Music For Men is out today in digital formats, but will not see a physical release until October 6th. I think that staggered release schedule is what threw me off and resulted in my sin of omission! ;)
I’ve only had a short time to get acquainted with this album, but I’m impressed so far. I honestly did not expect to be, as I’d sort of written The Gossip off as one of those bands that made a big initial splash but would probably not recapture that same energy with future releases. Looks like they’ve pulled a rabbit out of the hat, though. Beth Ditto’s trademark wail has gone a bit softer, but it certainly hasn’t lost its bite in the transition. Overall, they seem to have left the garage-blues behind in favor of 70s funk and slicker production. It’s a good fit, and I could see this record expanding their mainstream status in a big way.
