The Noisettes

I was never sure quite what The Noisettes were about. They seemed to be cheeky punks doing some genre dabbling, but this new track seems like a radical shift from anything on What’s the time Mr Wolf. More of a neo-soul throwback that might sit comfortably next to Amy Winehouse or Adele (makes sense given the new record was produced by Jim Abbiss). Where are the screams? The post punk rhythms? The indie weirdness?

Questions like that make it seem as though I don’t like new single ‘Never Forget You’, but that’s not true. It’s just taken me by surprise. Apparently, the new record – titled Wild Young Hearts – was made with the specific intention of focusing on lead singer Shingai Shoniwa, so that may explain the stylistic shift that’s apparent here. Of course I could be jumping the gun on that one, because I haven’t heard the rest of the new record. It’s a solid song, but if anyone but Shoniwa was singing it I’d probably listen a few times then shuffle it to the back of the pile. As it stands, she has a unique quality that elevates the track beyond the typical retro-mining fare.

If you dig the new tune, you can grab it on iTunes now. Watch the video on the widget below. Wild Young Hearts will be out on September 22nd.

I’ve always felt The Noisettes toe the line between also-rans and superstars. They seem to have the potential to be the later but for some reason never get that last little tick to make it. Consequently I find their albums more frustrating than anything – it’s like they just need to push it one more inch and it’d be amazing.
