The Dead Weather Giveaway
I’ve been holding back on Jack White’s latest ’supergroup’, The Dead Weather. I suppose I was cautious because A)I didn’t really care much for the Raconteurs, despite being a White Stripes & B Benson fan, B)I haven’t been crazy about the last two White Stripes albums, either and C)’supergroups’ are pretty hit and miss. Sometimes you get The New Pornographers, while other times you get Zwan…*shudder*.
There’s also the infamous and unavoidable ad that’s been circulating various media outlets, including Elbows. It’s one of those cover-the-entire-page numbers that drives you up the wall. Please listen advertising folk – we don’t mind subtle reminders, but blocking access to frequently used content with a big ‘HERE I AM LOOK LOOK’ ad is not the way to encourage anyone to buy what you’re sellin’. Just sayin’.
That aside, I don’t like to hold the decisions of a marketing team against a band, so I sampled The Dead Weather for myself. Glad I did! I could have missed out. It’s a return to the sort of down-and-dirty blues-rock that both The White Stripes and The Kills prided themselves on in their early days. Not that I didn’t love the last Kills album – I did – but it was clearly slicker and more produced than Keep On Your Mean Side. And certainly Jack & Meg White’s early efforts were slightly more shambolic than Icky Thump. Not necessarily better, just different.
Getting back to the promotional question – I’ve always thought that one of the best ways to get the word out about an album or band was to do a giveaway. It’s exciting, it isn’t confrontational, and most importantly, it’s voluntary. In that spirit, I’d like to offer up the following juicy giveaway:

1 copy of Horehound on CD
1 copy of Horehound on gate-fold vinyl
1 Dead Weather promo poster

I love love love this album. Glad you didn’t miss out. I almost passed it over for the same reasons. And I agree with you, the last couple White Stripes albums weren’t that great. ‘Elephant’ was always my personal fav.
Hmm to check out this album out or not. Unlikely I’d have a review up on my blog though with my relationship with Warner.
@Heather – Agreed! There were parts of ‘Get Behind Me Satan’ that I liked, but there was nothing as consistently good as the material on ‘Elephant’.
@Allan – I almost forgot about your WB kerfluffle. I’m really enjoying the album right now. In fact, between that, Band of Skulls & Spinnerette, I’ve been in this uber female rock zone for the last month that I’m not looking to get out of.
