Popular Workshop
Popular Workshop have somehow escaped my attention until now. They released their debut, We’re Alive And We’re Not Alone, in October of last year. From the few songs I’ve heard via Myspace (it still exists!), they seem like lo-fi indie noise a la the much-missed Test Icicles, though not quite so abrasive. They even do a wicked cover of Belle & Sebastian’s ‘Electronic Renaissance’! And you know full well I hate covers, so you’d better listen if you know what’s good for you.
They’ve made the following video for their single ‘Reptilians’. I’m a sucker for weird, and this video is unquestionably weird. It happens to have been nominated in the ‘Live Action’ category in the 2009 Adobe Design Achievement Awards. The ADAA “honors the most talented and promising student graphic designers, photographers, illustrators, animators, digital filmmakers, developers and computer artists from the world’s top institutions of higher education.” So there you go.
