We All Wanna Be Prince
Felix Da Housecat is one of the few early artists associated with Electroclash to have come out the other side unscathed and still interesting. Perhaps because he set the standard for so many that came after him with his 2001 LP, Kittenz and Thee Glitz. After that trendsetting record’s release, it seemed like every so-called electroclash artist tried to ape his style, and it was clear that most did not have the appreciation for what came before in the way that Felix always has. Due to that lack of originality, we ended up with more crap than creativity.
Of course, one thing that set Felix apart from many of his counterparts in that scene was A)his history with Chicago House & B)his appreciation for the mainstream. One minute he’d remix Fischerspooner, the next he’d tackle Justin Timberlake. The variety was never jarring. He carefully balances atop the mainstream/underground wall, never toppling over into either side. No obscurity for obscurity’s sake, no selling out, just working at being the best no matter what genre he might dip his toe into.
Felix’s love of a variety of 80s artists has been obvious from day 1, really, but it was clear he had a special fondness for The Purple One. Miss Tart will undoubtedly love the following quote from Felix about the inspiration behind his latest single:
“I wrote this song because even 25 years later We All Wanna Be Prince,” Felix explains. “Prince is one of the most brilliant, talented, and influential musicians of all time and without him many contemporary musicians would be nowhere.”
Kind of nice to hear after the weeks of MJ worship, isn’t it? And in view of the Prince inspiration, interesting that the latest record is titled He Was King.
