Mercury Prize nominees announced
Ahhh the Mercury Prize. Supposedly the more respectable award in comparison to its commercial peers, it has also become an infuriatingly inconsistent and sometimes hilariously out of touch honor. Lest we forget, they handed out an award to M People over Pulp, Blur & The Prodigy in 1994. Then there’s the so-called Mercury Curse – the idea that recipients of the award will quickly fade from popularity shortly after winning. Supposed victims include the aforementioned M People, Portishead, Roni Size & Talvin Singh. Ok, actually Portishead have never been lumped in there before, but ever since I heard Third I’ve been looking for someone to blame! Zing! I’ll be getting some nasty comments on that one, guaranteed.
This year’s nominees have been announced, and it looks like the ladies are leading the pack this year. La Roux, Bat For Lashes and Florence & The Machine are all hotly tipped to walk away with the award. I’m thinking the safe money is on Bat For Lashes or Glasvegas, but you never know.
