The Cribs ‘Cheat on Me’
Just a short time ago, Keath and I were having a conversation about the differences in the career trajectories of Johnny Marr and Morrissey, post-Smiths. While Morrissey has been the more consistent of the two, he’s also taken the safest path. He’s stayed in his comfort zone and stuck to the familiar. Not that I’m criticizing Morrissey – the man is amazing. But he clearly sticks to a proven formula.
Johnny Marr, on the other hand, is an unpredictable man. One minute he’s in Electronic, the next he’s in The The, then he’s doing session music for Oasis. A few years back he up and joined Modest Mouse out of nowhere, and now he’s in The Cribs (and according to his official website, he’s still in Modest Mouse, so he’s clearly a multi-tasker). Of course, when you’re involved in that many different projects, the output is bound to experience, shall we say, ‘peaks and valleys’. I don’t want to have to reference The Healers, but I will if I have to.
Of course, both men’s style might have to do with their personalities. Morrissey has always been a loner, whereas Johnny has always appeared to be a very social creature. So that he’d seek out collaborations isn’t much of a surprise. That half of those collaborations don’t end up working out is likely an acceptable price in his mind.
Decide for yourself whether his latest effort with The Cribs is a keeper, while reflecting on his past team efforts below.

Yeah, this isn’t the best song – without Marr’s guitar line it’d be even more forgettable than it currently is. But it’s always an adventure seeing where Marr will pop up next :)
