The Joy Formidable

The longer you blog about music, the more difficult you find the task of keeping up with any one band. As you’re exposed to more music, it’s easy (and natural) for your excitement to shift to another target. I’ll put it this way – we’re basically puppies chasing cars, so once a new one passes into our field of view, the last one’s gone. SQUIRREL!

The trick is to fight that instinct. After all, if part of our responsibility/job as a blogger is to promote the bands we love, we need to keep talking about them long after their tracks have fallen off The Hype Machine and PR firms stop sending out one-sheet bios about them. It’s not the easiest thing to do, but we do our best.

In an attempt to further that goal, I wanted to give an update on one of my favorite discoveries of the last year, The Joy Formidable, a brilliant and beautiful band that released their debut, A Balloon Called Moaning, back in January. There’s more heart and soul in the 8 tracks of that debut CD than most double LPs. The band have been hitting the festival circuit for most of the summer, and will soon be playing a double-header at Leeds and Reading. On Sept 30th they’ll be playing a show at London’s Garage alongside Little Death and Twin Atlantic. If you’re anywhere nearby, be sure to catch them! I have no doubt they’ll be conquering the world in the near future.
