New Midnight Juggernauts

Midnight Juggernauts were one my favorite new bands of 2007. They rode in with the massive wave of Australian pop that included Van She, Cut Copy and The Presets, but clearly weren’t quite as in love with 80s dance and disco as their mates on Modular. Instead, they turned to the 70s, with bands like ELO and Can (circa Future Days) serving as inspiration. The result was a new spin on a familiar sound, but one that was so fun you didn’t find yourself constantly comparing it unfavorably to the source material.

The band have recently announced a second album is in the works, to be released sometime in 2010. This new song, ‘This New Technology’, will presumably find itself on album #2. So what’s the word? They’re still giving their keyboards & organs a good workout, though the music itself has taken on a slightly more ominous tone. There’s still a strong focus on harmony, but the vocals are a bit…dirtier? Rougher? I’m not even sure it’s the same vocalist, honestly. I like it, though I hope the album itself ventures even farther from the safe zone of their first than this does. It could come out really interesting.
