Well, I’ve once again been shamed into admitting that I clearly don’t listen to enough music from Arizona bands. How did I miss these guys? They’ve received writeups in Spin and Rolling Stone named them one of the 25 Best Bands on Myspace. What the..? Am I really this oblivious to what’s happening right next to me?

Personal embarrassment aside, Miniature Tigers are a band you should look into. I caught wind of them thanks to Casey over at Crumblr, but the original post came from a great blog called Cover Me Songs. They specialize in covers – a field that regular readers will know is not my favorite one, admittedly – and posted this pretty great cover of ABBA’s ‘Mamma Mia’ by the band. Fortunately, MT have a lot more to offer than a spiffy 70s Europop cover.

The 4 piece released their debut over a year ago on Modern Art Records (yet another Phoenix treasure I’m kicking myself for being unaware of). You can pick up Tell It To The Volcano on iTunes, and most of the album’s tracks are available for streaming on the band’s Myspace. The band seems to excel at delicate and endearing indie pop, with memorable, clever lyrics. I’d recommend ‘Cannibal Queen’ or ‘Tchaikovsky and Solitude’ as standouts.
