Mumford & Sons Live Norwich Art Centre

Written By: Mark on October 4, 2009 One Comment

I kinda need to start this post with a heads up to the support artists Pete Roe and the Rodney Fisher band who both contributed to a fantastic evening. As always the Art Centre crowd showed due respect to them both. Indeed Marcus commented upon it as Mumford & Sons took to the stage (nice touch).

Mumford & Sons, what can I say apart from the fact that I came with an open mind. I left a fan. I’m really enjoying the sea of change from landfill indie to music of substance. This band may be the current industry darlings but they deliver. How many times do you go to see a band who deliver maybe three or four songs that move you?

Then after a 45 minute set they’re gone leaving you wondering if they have anything more? Well let me tell you Mumford & Sons deliver a full set running at nearly 90 minutes, I was transfixed that they created a wall of sound that far transcends the recorded sound. Marcus is a master at conversing with the crowd! To think they are still in the early stages of development makes me wonder where they could go.

Make no mistake they deliver harmonies every bit as good as the Fleet Foxes, tracks like ‘Hold onto what you believe’ show a lyrically maturity and room to expand further from the undoubted folk roots.

For me it was an eye opening experience, to be honest I enjoyed it more than the opening night of Fleet Foxes’ last. Highlight of the night: very hard but probably the whole crowd rockin’ hoedown style to ‘Roll Away Your Stone’.

The album drops 5th October on Island Records. Many thanks to Shane Allen for the wonderful photos, I’m so pleased to have him on board and last but not least Matt from Stayloose for the listing!!!!!

Just as a footnote here is a little video I shot of the band’s encore covering Calvin Harris prior to yesterday’s BBC Radio Live Lounge session!!
