Bloc Party/Grammatics Live Cambridge Corn Exchange

As the line between true Indie bands and the mainstream seems to become more and more blurred. I have recently been kinda shying away from listening to bands I ought to maybe give a little more time to. Traveling down to Cambridge, I wondered if the night ahead would really inspire me, as lately I have been feeling a little gigged out!!! Main support came from one of my favourite bands, Grammatics. Boy have they grown into the bigger stage – Owen Brindley made the vast stage his own as they gradually warmed the crowd. Showcasing tracks from the debut self-titled album (Dance To The Radio), I was once again mightily impressed.

They are one of those bands that suck you in, mesmerize and stretch your senses before spitting you back to reality!! In “Relentless Fours” they have an amazing track to close a set which builds to an all encompassing crescendo. If there is any justice pretty soon they will be headlining these kind of venues!!!

So onto the main event Bloc Party, having seen them last year at a festival I knew they were capable of delivering live. This time round I had the pleasure of a fantastic view from the V.I.P guest mezzanine on the first floor. My days of hero worship and adoration are well behind me but Bloc party create that kind of aura live. Looking down on the kids bouncing about way back from the mosh pit was a fair reflection on the synergy created. The set consisted of a pretty good mix of tracks from Intimacy and older favourites. By the encore even I was up and on my feet dancing to Helicopter!!! All this takes me back to where we came in…both these bands are experimental and push the musical boundaries and surely that’s the true essence of Indie music. I left the Corn Exchange pleasantly invigorated that good British music is alive and kicking. Finally many thanks to Giovanna from Sure Shot for the listing much appreciated!!!
