DJ Hero Giveaway

Written By: Sean on November 3, 2009 No Comment

DISCLAIMER: I am not being paid by DJ Hero to post this. I did not receive a free DJ Hero set. I did not receive inducements of any kind to write about the game. I just thought this was a cool concept, and that it would be fun to reward a reader.

Confession: I avoided all this Guitar Hero business for a very long time. I’m not a gamer, so I just didn’t see the point. Plus, any time I saw one of those game setups while out and about (they quite often had them at nightclubs while I was DJing, funny enough) it always seemed like people had turned into zombies and were totally transfixed while playing. It kind of weirded me out, so I just avoided it all. And since I’m not one to own a gaming system, there wasn’t much point.

Oh, but then came a fateful day earlier this year when I stayed with some friends at their apartment. We were doing a DJ gig later in the night, and we needed to kill some time beforehand. He just happened to have a Wii, and said ‘Want to play some Guitar Hero?’. I told him I’d never played, so he anxiously got out the gear and got me ready. I’ll admit I wasn’t very good at it, but oh boy did I immediately get why people were so addicted. I only managed to play The Kaiser Chiefs’ ‘Ruby’ with any accuracy, but it was fun even when I was getting booed off stage.

So it’s not difficult for me to imagine how fun the concept could be if shifted from a guitar to a turntable. After all, in the last decade it seems as if DJs had become the new rock stars (Alexander Technique’s objections notwithstanding). With the rise of Serato and Final Scratch, it’s kind of surprising that someone didn’t develop a game like this already, honestly.

But they didn’t, and now we have DJ Hero. The game features special turntable controllers (much like Guitar Hero’s guitar controllers) that allow players to fade, mix and scratch various musical pairings. The game essentially features pre-mixed mashups that players then attempt to match by pressing control buttons in the right sequence (one button backspins, another scratches, another acts as a crossfader). It definitely simplifies the real process, but if you made a game that perfectly emulated the real thing, I imagine too many people would complain of its difficulty and run from their Xbox/PlayStation/Wii in anger. So they’ve probably struck the right balance here – make people feel like they’re doing it, without actually making them do it.

In celebration of the game’s release last week, we’ve been afforded the opportunity for a little giveaway!
