New Release Tuesday

rewolf
Asobi Seksu – Rewolf

I’ve always liked what I’ve heard from Asobi Seksu, but I’ve also never gone out of my way to prioritize their music in my personal queue. No good reason for that, other than I simply have too much music to listen to, and I can’t possibly give all of it the attention it deserves. I do try, but imperfect creature that I am it doesn’t always turn out. Rewolf is a set of acoustic reworkings of the band’s previous material, which should prove interesting given their typically lush shoegaze arrangements.

In this light and on this evening
Editors – In This Light and on This Evening

Keath has written off Editors, telling me I only listen to them because when I shut my eyes I’m ‘pretending it’s Bauhaus’. Cheeky bastard! I’m not going to pretend as though Editors don’t wear some of their influences on their sleeve, but this new album is really catchy, and I’m pretty sure that’s what was missing from their second album. They’ve apparently fallen in love with synths over the last few years, and seeing that in print in front of me makes me realize a number of you will now run away from your computers, screaming in terror. Come back! It’s really not as awful as it sounds. Sure, ‘Papillon’ sits comfortably somewhere between ‘Saturdays in Silesia’ and ‘Singing Rule Britannia’, but it also happens to be a damned good song in its own right. Tom Smith has managed to add desperation and urgency to his emotional repertoire.

Editors – Papillon

hurricane bells
Hurricane Bells – Tonight Is The Ghost

I was turned on to Longwave back in the days of Napster (shhh, don’t tell!). I’ve followed them off and on since then, so I was pleasantly surprised to hear that lead singer Steve Shiltz was releasing a solo album as Hurricane Bells. I haven’t had much time to absorb the material, but you can stream the entire album on Spinner.

bad lieutenant
Bad Lieutenant – Never Cry Another Tear

This one’s been getting ripped pretty mercilessly most everywhere, and I’ll admit that were it not for the fact that this is basically New Order minus Peter Hook, I’d have probably not listened twice. The nicest thing I could probably say about Bad Lieutenant is that they’re fairly MOR, and will likely be better than Freebass. They sound a lot like bands in the 90s that were influenced by New Order, like South. But in the end, you’re still talking about Bernard Sumner, who has his effortless charm and wide-eyed optimism on display in anything he’s involved in. So I can’t hate it, but I don’t love it, either.

Bad Lieutenant – Sink or Swim
