Adam Freeland settles with BEP
I had no idea any of this had ever happened, which goes to show how out of the loop I must be. Apparently, The Black Eyed Peas released a song on their latest album titled ‘Party All The Time’ (not the most original title) which sounds suspiciously similar to an Adam Freeland track called ‘Mancry’ – at first I thought it was called ‘Mimicry’ which would of been funnier, obviously.
In a world where someone sues Coldplay every other week for ’stealing’ one of their tunes, I’ve started to simply ignore these kinds of claims. I guess Joe Satriani had some cause, though I think he releases 37 albums a year so really everyone in a band should be on the lookout because it’s inevitable you’ll make something he’s made. But this particular claim seemed a bit weird, as Adam Freeland is a reasonably high profile guy.
So I listened to the two songs, and lo and behold, the backing synth and drums sound identical. And when I say identical, I mean identical. They haven’t even changed the timing or done a damn thing to mask it. Sure, the Freeland song isn’t exactly complex – I think there are all of 3 notes in there – but it’s unquestionably the same song. It appears the BEP’s really did rip off Adam Freeland. And apparently they’ve admitted it, based on his Facebook update this morning:
Adam Freeland: Just settled w/ Black eyes Peas who ripped off Mancry. If you see me in the next wk say ‘Party all the time’ I’ll buy you a beer. Woo hoop!
