Florence & Jarvis – Girl With One Eye
Oh let’s be honest, the sound quality here is far from excellent, but just about anything Jarvis Cocker does is wonderful. As for the song itself, I’ve never been quite sure what to think. It’s slightly creepy, isn’t it?
I took a knife and cut out her eye
I took it home and watched it wither and die
Well, she’s lucky that I didn’t slip her a smile
That’s why she sleeps with one eye open
What exactly is one meant to take from that? Florence could just come out and tell us, but I’ll admit I always find it a bit boring when songwriters explain away the mysteries of a song. What the listener takes away is far more interesting (and telling, in some ways). Besides, as I understand it her former boyfriend in Ludes actually wrote it, so we’d probably have to ask him. Though I don’t think they’re called Ludes anymore, are they? Oh, but that’s the subject for a different post.
So is it about sexual violence? Losing one’s virginity? A lesbian love affair?*
