Coming in 2010: Blood Red Shoes
Blood Red Shoes are from the Long Blondes/Sons & Daughters school of female-fronted punk pop. The duo broke in 2007 with their brilliant ‘It’s Getting Boring By The Sea’ single, but didn’t seem to make as much of a splash with their debut album, Box of Secrets. It wasn’t a bad album by any means – I’d say it’s a solid 6.5/10 – but was perhaps a victim of poor timing. 2007/2008 ended up as The Justice Years, and it seemed everyone had become burned out on guitar-based music (for good reason, in some cases).
With that in mind, I didn’t really know if we’d hear from them again or not. But I had considered that this might be a good time for a comeback, as the latest wave of electro seems to have reached its saturation point. Now all we’re getting are watered-down, boring versions of once interesting sounds. How many more Justice-a-likes can the world endure? So I suspect the pendulum might be swinging back in the guitar’s direction.
At any rate, Blood Red Shoes apparently are coming back, and they seem to have taken a chapter from The Horrors playbook – darker atmospheres, fuzzier guitars. I like this. I’ll be interested to hear if they sustain this kind of sound for the entire album or if they have even more tricks up their sleeve. 2010, here we come.
