Ash Space Shot
I feel like Ash somehow did themselves a disservice by releasing ‘Return of the White Rabbit’ as the first single – or the ‘prequel single’, as they put it – from their A-Z singles project. Not only was it an absolutely fantastic song that pretty much summed up all of Ash’s greatest strengths in a neat little package, it was accompanied by an absolutely brilliant and thoroughly memorable video – a feat not to be taken lightly in these digital days we live in.
It’s not that subsequent singles have been weak; they’ve actually been pretty damn solid so far. It’s simply that none have had the wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am punch of ROTWR. New single ‘Space Shot’ is a fun, breezy, electropop number. I like it! It feels a bit Muse-y, admittedly, but it’s good. However, compare it to ‘Return of the White Rabbit’, and I think it ends up as a decent piece of album filler. Still a solid B, mind you, but just imagine if they’d held ROTWR back ’til the end! I imagine that song makes even Andy Gill jealous.

I would define the subsequent singles as “disappointing.” White Rabbit set the bar and the band hasn't hit it again yet.
I don't think I'd go that far, but they aren't quite there, no.
