Shy Child Return

I always find it interesting when a band ends up more successful outside their country of origin than in it. This happens a lot in these days of internet globalism we live in, but once upon a time a band might hope for a hit in their home territory with the idea of making it onto the charts in another country not even a glint in their eye. Now you have bands like Ladytron who end much bigger in America than in the UK.

From what I’ve seen, that’s the case with Brooklynites Shy Child. I never saw a lot of splash over here, but they seemed to make a pretty good impression in Australia & the UK – they even played a support slot for Muse at Wembley Stadium! A reasonably big deal, I’d say. I had my eye on them because they worked with Paul Epworth on their debut, and it was an awesomely quirky little record.

I’ve been looking forward to a follow-up, and it looks like we’ll be seeing one this March. The band recently debuted the first of their new material by way of a video premiere on Pitchfork. The new track is called ‘Disconnected’, and it’s admittedly a bit more straightforward than their previous work has been. It sort of falls somewhere between the fluffy pop of Van She and Beautiful Small Machines, which isn’t a bad thing by any means. I’ll have to hear more of the album to get an idea of where they’re going with this, but between now and March you’ll have to be satisfied with this little taste.
