Paul Weller – Wake Up The Nation Remixes
The Modfather is set to release a new album entitled Wake Up The Nation. The first samples I have heard are these two remixes. I was not sure what to make of the Zinc Remix of the title track – on a first play it seemed a little out of place. However the more I have spun it the more it grows on me. Weller seems to be one of these artists who can evolve in a seamless fashion. Much in the way Bowie did through the late 70′s and early 80′s, this works on lots of levels.
The second track I have clearance for is a real slice of 60′s-influenced soul, I fell in love with its strings and all the first spin. This is everything and more I would hope for from a Weller song; at times simplistic and at others with full blown Spector style production. I look forward to hearing the album version of this entitled “No Tears To Cry”. I have to take my hat off to Leo Zero for this stunning remix. This is right up there with the best of Atlantic or Stax Northern Soul floor fillers for me and I know a bit about these things!
Even more interesting is the fact that one Mr. Bruce Foxton has played bass on two of the album tracks. In fact, collaborations seem to be the order of the day with Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine) and The Moves Bev Bevan making guest appearances. Then throw in the legendary session drummer Clem Cattini for good measure!
This drops on April 19th (Island Records). I look forward to reviewing the the full package soon. Preceding this these two tracks are released as a double A-side single on April 12th.

Wait, so is Steve White not still drumming for Wella?
I love the guy – I’d classify Weller as “stays timeless” rather than “evolve.” You can mix and match his stuff from all stages of his career without much trouble. What makes him so amazing is he can keep going to the same well and come back time and time again with songs that sound fresh and vibrant. Not many can do that!
