New Release Tuesday

Goldfrapp – Head First
Buy: Amazon
I’ll have to admit I haven’t had the time to fully digest Goldfrapp’s new album, though I do think ‘Rocket’ is a hell of a single (especially those Richard X remixes). This duo haven’t let me down yet, so I don’t expect them to start with Head First.
I should mention that the band will be appearing stateside at the Hollywood Bowl on June 27th as part of KCRW’s World Festival series. Omara Portuondo, vocalist for the infamous Buena Vista Social Club, will also be appearing. Tickets can be found here.

Laura Marling – I Speak Because I Can
Buy: Amazon
I have spent some time with Miss Marling’s new record, and I have to say, what a record! There was so much talk of ‘maturity beyond her years’ the last time around – and I think even I was guilty of it – but I Speak Because I Can makes Alas, I Cannot Swim sound like mere child’s play. Even the titles signify a shift in her assertiveness.
And fans won’t have to wait long for a follow-up, as Laura has said she’ll be releasing another record later this year.

She & Him – Volume 2
Buy: Amazon
She & Him aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. They are my cup of tea, especially if that cup of tea is being served on a sunny afternoon. I haven’t had much time with the new record, but plan on dedicating some listening space to it later this week. From what I gather, if you liked Volume 1 you’ll likely be pleased with Volume 2. And if you didn’t like Volume 1, you’ll probably not be won over with Volume 2. Such is life.

Jonsi – Go
Buy: Amazon
Jonsi is better known as the voice behind Sigur Ros. I have to admit, I wasn’t expecting a solo album from the little guy (trust me, I met him once and he is a tiny, tiny fella). But judging by the single ‘Go Do’, I imagine he must have had a little bit of a pop itch to scratch that he felt he couldn’t with the band. Well, maybe pop isn’t the right word, but on initial listen his solo material certainly seems more traditionally structured than the typical Sigur Ros track. The bottom line is the man’s voice is absolutely lovely, so he could probably sing the contents of the Health Care Reform package and I’d still swoon over it.
