The 66 – Storm EP
The 66 are very much a part of the blossoming Manchester scene. Having first hit my radar in 2008, I have been following their steady rise through the ranks. These lads are a hard working bunch, gigging non-stop as well as recording countless demos along the way. I have been dying for them to put a proper physical release out this EP, as it kind of sums up what they are about as a band.
The opening title track is a nice slice of dirty rock’n'roll with thunderous guitars. There is more of a Doors-inspired blues feel to ‘Red Dog’, a killer track best played loud through a decent set of cans. Third track ‘Hidden Glove’ is a slice of 60′s mod-inspired psychedelia akin to The Creation.
The band’s full diversity is evident on ‘Break of Dawn’; it’s a classic and my favourite track on the EP with a vocal that reminded me of The Verve at their very best. I’m not sure even with that praise that I have done it justice. Hell, it’s one of the best tunes I have heard this year!
The EP’s closer, ‘Money Men’, nearly reaches the heights of ‘Break Of Dawn’, although it’s slightly more upbeat musically. Daniel Rimmer is a lead vocalist you should take note of as he has that Rock’n'Roll swagger about him that’s all too scarce nowadays. This little gem has two release dates; November 1st at http://www.outlierrecords.co.uk in both physical and digital formats, and then worldwide via the usual download outlets from December 1st.
