Versant

Remember Shiny Toy Guns? They had that great song, ‘Le Disko’. It was snotty & dancey & fun, and the first few times I heard it I thought my CD was skipping because of that part where the sound drops out. And they did a pretty wicked cover of Depeche Mode’s ‘Stripped’, too. Then they replaced their lead singer, Carah Faye, with a less interesting girl that was almost a Pussycat Doll, and from there they were committed to the bargain bin of history.
Oh alright, maybe I’m being a little unfair. Still, I know I didn’t much care for the switch nor the second album. Carah might not have been the only creative input behind the band, but she was certainly the most identifiable voice. Her absence was only magnified with the shift from their electronic roots to a MOR alternative rock sound.
For those of you who couldn’t quite make the leap to STG 2.0, we now have Carah’s new band, Versant. They just released their debut EP, Heartbeats, and it sounds like what I wished Season of Poison had sounded like. Heavy beats coupled with soaring synths and Carah’s fierce, dramatic vocals. Her voice demands to be front-and-center, and thankfully it hasn’t been reduced by auto-tuning it into robot oblivion. Check out lead single ‘Quick Escapes’ below. The band has asked that we keep it streaming only.
The EP is both self-produced and self-released, so do the band (and yourself) a favor and pick up a copy on iTunes, Amazon or from the Versant store.
PS – Here’s the band’s nifty cover of ABBA’s ‘S.O.S.’
