News and Views

More than real news, this is just a heap of stuff I want to share with you guys. First of all, I’m really glad to see the lead up to the release of The Joy Formidable’s full length debut, The Big Roar is attracting some serious media attention. They must be a glowing beacon to any new bands out there starting on the long road to becoming fully-fledged recording artists and succeeding on your own terms without compromise.

Just a reminder as well that the album drops next Monday on Atlantic/Canvasback Records and the single ‘Austere’ is out right now.

The Palpitations are fast becoming another site favourite. Though they have not been on my radar for long, there is a real feel good factor to everything they do. Much like the Joy Formidable they are steadily building up a loyal fanbase. I am a firm believer in bands connecting with fans, giving away free tracks and taking time out to thank them for support.

These guys are putting out a new single on 14th Feb via fledgling label CLUB.THE.MAMMOTH. Lead track ‘Milk It’ is an edgy slice of guitar rock with a Siouxie Sioux style vocal. They are a band that seem to cross genres. ‘Love Is True (That’s Why It Hurts)’ explores and expands on the early 80′s goth sound evident on ‘Milk It’. The latest free download from the band, ‘Shirley Valentine’, already feels like every classic, big production powerpop song you have in your collection.

The band play a special single launch show at The Lock Tavern on Thursday, 17th February. There is a Soundcloud link below to stream the single, so if you have not already taken my advice and latched onto this group, check them out now!

Now for a general round up of news from my every creaking inbox! Two Door Cinema Club have a new single out on the 7th Feb lifted from the debut Tourist History (Kitsune). There is a rather snappy video for ‘What You Know’, and the band have just been A-listed by BBC Radio 1, so it looks like the sky will be the limit in 2011.

Finally, a few of my favourite artists head out and about on the road over the next few weeks. Obviously topping the list is The Joy Formidable, who will be in a town near you showcasing The Big Roar. The other artists listed below are some of my current favourites and well worth spending a evening in the company of!
