Turn It Gold

I know I just posted about Hesta Prynn a few weeks ago, but she’s already introducing new material for 2011. Her as-yet-unnamed debut album will be released later this year, after a European tour and a modeling stint with designer Deryl K (that she models in her spare time can’t come as much of a surprise to anyone, can it?). She also writes about non-music things at Artist Direct. Where she finds time for music making is beyond me!
Her video for new track ‘Turn It Gold’ is a low-budget DIY affair, mostly consisting of shots of Miss Prynn looking into a mirror and rolling around on a bed. Think of a less seedy ‘Criminal‘ and you’re probably in the ballpark. I mentioned the similarities to Kathleen Hanna’s vocal style when I first posted about ‘Can We Go Wrong’, and that still holds true for ‘Turn It Gold’. Considering the fact that she shared stages with both Le Tigre as well as Tegan & Sara during her time in Northern State, this may not be anything to be surprised about.
I’ll admit I didn’t get as big a kick out of it as the video for ‘Can We Go Wrong’, but the song itself is a lot of fun. I think Prynn understands that value of song economy, especially when it comes to this kind of lo-fi electropunk. She always seems to end her songs at just the right moment, never allowing them to wear out their welcome. It’s an intuitive skill and she seems like a natural at it. Here’s to the debut!
‘Turn It Gold’ is available for pre-order on Rough Trade.
