Keath’s 2011 Experiment: Week 1
Sometime around late January I realized I was completely and utterly bored with my music archive. To shake things up I’m trying an experiment: for the remainder of 2011 I will only listen to music released in 2011. This is an account of the year.

Dynamite Steps
The Twilight Singers
Buy It
Hey, have you heard the new Afghan Whigs Twilight Singers album?
I’m working on a decade strong musical crush on all things Dulli so the chances of getting an unbiased review here are pretty slim, but I can say in neutrality that this is a return to the Whigs sound. While not as vicious an exorcism as 1965 was, Dulli hasn’t lost his knack of making the dark gorgeous. Hands down my favorite album of 2011 thus far.

To Drink The Rain
Malcolm Holcombe
Buy It
Back before Country became Pop (and before Pop became bad R&B), Country and Blues were married with common theme and purpose. Malcolm Holcombe is a return to old school country, incorporating his rough voice and bluesy riffs into the country motif of banjos and fiddles. He also has a keen ear for slightly melancholy melodies. A very satisfying listen.

Sun Bronzed Greek Gods
Dom
Buy It
It might be odd for a perfect summer album to be released in the middle of February, but those of you in locations beset by excessive snowfall might be well thanking providence it is so. If nothing else you can warm yourself up by dancing along.

This Week’s Best MP3s
Despite my fondness for their band name, I can’t confess to ever being much of a Mogwai fan. This track, however, is a pleasant exception to the rule.
MP3: The Liptonians – You Know I Did
I’m assuming the band is not named after people who drink Lipton tea, although that would be fabulous if they were. I like the dynamics of this song, how the horn and piano plod along and hold back the other elements trying to rush ahead. There’s an interesting tension there.
MP3: The Barettas – Touche
Ceci spotted this one first, so credit to where credit’s due. I’m glad she did because it’s a nice little garage rock ditty, filled with great harmonies. You can snag more free Barettas at their bandcamp page, linked to above.
