SXSW 2011: A Snapshot by The Joy Formidable PT2
Meet the Goldheart Assembly, who we played with at Reading and Leeds last year. Great band, fear our gig schedules conflict, but we hope we can do some shows together soon.
Giddiness ensues at various locations around town, I eat the best cream corn known to man and sample the Texan dirty martinis. Been looking forward to this moment ; Edwyn Collins playing in a tiny club called Nuvelo. Great set, very nice telecaster tone and an unexpected chance to meet the man himself.
Hitch a lift in a bicycle drawn cart, singing “Losing Sleep” through the streets of Austin. Then walk the rest, over the bridge, watching the bats in the trees and enjoying the chirps and cheeps of a hazy Texan night.
Today is hot and yesterday I drank too much whisky.
Waterloo Records is a fucking superb record store. Play on their outside stage at 2pm , enjoy a good sweat, a cold beer afterwards and a cuddle with Mabel the pug.
Our first instore signing ensues, meet some lovely folks. Matt has an ink accident with a sharpie.
Quick bite at Spaghetti Warehouse, which Matt proclaims are the worst meatballs he’s ever tasted. He’s also been put off by a pre-lunch trip to the toilet where he encountered a 12 inch turd floater. Not the best aperitif.
Note on interview questions. Bored by questions of guitar revival and what’s this devil they’re calling “grunge noveau”. Yawn.
Enjoy some amusement at Buffalo Billiards and enjoy a brilliant crowd at our 11pm show. Lots of fun, my timmy birds malfunction, they must have drank too much whisky too. See Screaming Females, have a beer and do an unintelligible interview with Jen Long for Radio Wales.
Go home, fall asleep listening to Rush’s Hempisheres.
