The Flowerpot Sessions

Communion Records – The Flowerpot Sessions
10/10

I should be shot!! I was on a 450-mile road trip today, with this as one of my travelling companions, and I suddenly had a light bulb moment that I had somehow not reviewed it! Shame on me, as this is the best compilation album I have heard since well, the last Communion offering last year.

I have a favourite hooded top that I wear like a comfort blanket, mostly when hungover. This record already holds a place nearly as dear to my heart. Recorded over a week of sessions at the tiny – sadly no longer with us – Flowerpot venue in Kentish town, it recreated the original Communion ethos of a group of friends getting together to make music for the love of it. The whole idea was to create something not too polished, and most of the recordings have that feel. I could go on and on about the quality of the songs throughout the double CD and how much I love everyone of them. But I’m thinking that if you read BIYL, most of them have been featured at one time or another – in fact, it could almost be a BIYL compilation!

From the blues-infused beginning supplied by Kill IT Kid & The Joker and The Thief in the form of ‘Something Funny’, the album will continue to enchant you and make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck virtually throughout. Monument Valley is someone I’m not familiar with yet, but his contribution ‘Scattered Hearts’ has taken over my head much like ‘Peter’ by Elena Tonra (Daughter) did on the last Communion offering. Disc two has a fantastic version of ‘You’re The One That I Want’ by Damien Rice and Julia & Angus Stone. Throw in two wonderful tracks by Sarah Blasko that will tug at the very depths of your soul. To be honest, I feel that I’m being a little unfair picking out individual offerings. This is just the most beautiful collection of never-to-be-repeated moments that you should add to your record library. In fact, I defy anyone not to fall in love and cherish it like that favourite sweater!
