Round Up From My Postbox

The postman has been rather busy delivering me shiny promos! It seems a glut of them just lately, not that I am complaining as there are some corkers amongst them. Mostly due to the fact that I don’t have 25 hours in the day and I don’t want you to miss out, here is a round up of stuff you should check out.

Ben Howard releases his debut single ‘The Wolves’, and this is a follow-up to the excellent Old Pine EP which we featured a while back. It’s worth buying for the haunting live acoustic version alone. Ben heads out on tour through October and also has an album announcement due later in the year. Tickets for the dates are available here :www.musicglue.com/BenHoward

The Fanclub are a band that have so far slipped through my net. This double-sided digital release on August 8th is the first release from the upcoming debut longplayer. The band are offering one track, ‘Let’s Measure Next Year better’ as a free download from Soundcloud. The lead track, ‘A Real Horror Part 2′ described by the band as a thank you note to The Smiths is indeed as melancholic an offering I have heard since, well, The Smiths. The album will be released through Underdogs Music and I’m already feeling this is a band I could very well become easily attached to!

I spent quite a while hanging out with The Black Sharks recently at Playfest. They are proper musicians, delivering a wide spectrum from blues through to stuff like the new single ‘Jokers Wild’, which has a real West Coast feel. This drops July 18th with an album to follow. see the band’s website for details.

I recently went to the Sargasso Trio album launch, and it was another of those times when I was not too sure what to expect. I left pretty much sold on the colourful fusion that abounds on Get To Grips, the band’s latest offering on their own Science And Nature label. If truth be told, this album pretty much nails any genre you can get up and dance to. Refreshingly experimental in parts, yet it retains a mainstream appeal. They are a band that have worked hard to earn live sessions for the likes of BBC 6 Music. They are another one of those bands I feel could really breakthrough if they get the right exposure.
