Marcus Foster – Nameless Path

Marcus Foster – Nameless Path
8/10

I have been hanging onto this album for dear life for the last couple of months. Seems Marcus Foster is a young man whose name is on many a scribe’s lip! I was lucky enough to be introduced to his graveled tones pretty early. Though I enjoyed his previous EP release, it’s only on this debut long player that we get to fully appreciate the diversity and full talents of Marcus. At times, it all becomes a little disjointed, but you only have to listen to lead single ‘I Was Broken’ to realise that Foster is the real deal.

In fact, and this is only a personal opinion, I find the gentle, folk side of the album more appealing. ‘You My Love’ is simply a beautiful love song. I can equally appreciate the more dulcet tones of the soulful numbers like ‘The Room’. It’s when he attempts to cover the ground of bands like Kill It Kid that he loses me. He still does an able job of covering the blues style, but I don’t believe him quite the way I do on ‘I Was Broken’.

This is a record that I really enjoy in fits and starts, and I have a feeling that I’m going to grow to love it more than I do right now., which was part of the reason I held back from an early review. It’s a record I want to love completely, yet I’m finding it hard to lose myself in it like I could say, with Dylan le Blanc. Listening through again tonight, I’m getting more from it than I did the last time. I reckon this one will be a slowburner for many of you. For once I can easily pick out the standout tracks with ease, and the three aforementioned tracks along with album closer ‘Memory Of Your Arms’ are outstanding.

Marcus heads out on the road with The Pierces through October and November. He really is worth seeing live so check him out!
